THE KING HAS RETURNED: Finding Your Way Back When You’ve Lost Your Path
I remember it clearly—it was the first memory I have of becoming conscious and starting to remember things as a child. I was 5 years old. Like many, I can’t recall much before that age (why is that?). It was June 1994, exactly 30 years ago, when I went to my first film: The Lion King. From that day forward, I was captivated by the movie, memorizing the lines and quoting it almost like scripture. Even today, many of Rafiki’s wise words to Simba resonate with me and guide my life.
Two years ago, those lessons from The Lion King helped me overcome a major challenge. I felt as if I had lost my power, the essence that made me who I am. The situation made me question everything I knew about myself and my leadership. I needed a way to reconnect with my true self, and that’s when I met my first coach.
Despite co-founding a non-profit organization centered around coaching, I realized that education-based coaching doesn’t always translate seamlessly to general leadership and life coaching. My coach helped rebuild my confidence and leadership qualities, showing me that I needed to own my unique strengths.
To reconnect with yourself, it’s crucial to have someone who can remind you of who you are, your unique qualities, and your distinct leadership style. In times of hardship, we often forget these truths. That’s why a coach is essential. Like Rafiki in The Lion King, a good coach guides you but lets you find your own way. Rafiki helped Simba remember his role and responsibilities, leading him back to his purpose at Pride Rock.
This month, we celebrate 30 years of The Lion King and Simba’s reign as king. Without Rafiki’s guidance, Simba might still be wandering in the forest, sudo-fulfilled but most defiantly not living in his purpose. Similarly, as I celebrate my birthday this Friday, I’m excited about the work we’re doing at Messy Roots. We’re helping leaders reclaim their rightful positions and embrace their power.
If you want to be part of this journey, consider becoming a coach through our Coaching Foundations Course next month or our full certification program at the Messy Roots Coaching Academy. Your path to leadership begins with acknowledging your journey and inspiring others to do the same.
June is also Men’s Mental Health Month. Many of us, including myself, have needed professional support to navigate our darkest moments. For my birthday, I’ve partnered with Eustress to raise $500 to help subsidize therapy for those who can’t afford it. Click here to donate and support this vital cause.
Let’s continue the work.
Love Y’all For Free,
Mario Jovan
